Starting a Skincare Business: How Talo Farmacy Became the Hug I Didn’t Know I Needed

There are two types of people in this world: those who decompress with deep breaths and yoga mats—and those who overhaul their entire life structure and build something from scratch. I’ll let you guess which one I am.

Spoiler: I didn’t launch Talo Farmacy from a place of zen clarity. It was more like a mix of stubborn vision, unmet creative energy, and the kind of mental exhaustion that makes you re-evaluate everything. I knew skincare could be simpler, cleaner, and deeply nourishing—so I did what felt right. I went all in.

Starting a business, especially solo, is kind of like joining a rodeo you didn’t train for. You’re building labels, sending emails, making products, shipping orders, checking inventory, and trying to remember if you ate lunch. The learning curve? Vertical. And yes, I’m still the only one on the payroll.

Real Skin, Real Intentions

From the beginning, I didn’t want to make another “beauty brand.” I wanted to make balm that spoke for itself—clean, grass-fed tallow, infused oils, intentionally chosen scents, and zero fluff. Just ingredients your skin recognizes and loves.

Eventually, something clicked. Despite the daily chaos and steep learning curves, I realized I didn’t need a vacation or a long nap. What I needed was purpose. I needed to feel ownership. I needed to build something that reflected my values—something I could be proud of every time I scooped a jar into someone’s hand.

These days, my time is divided between handcrafting balm, answering questions about dry skin at farmers markets, and watching people’s eyes light up when they test a sample and whisper, “Ooh, that’s nice.”

The Little Rituals That Keep Me Sane

In the midst of shipping label confusion and trying to decode USPS delivery times, I’ve found that tiny habits matter. One of my favorites? Starting the morning with a soft glow instead of a blaring alarm. I’ve been using this sunrise alarm clock that gradually lights up my space while I make tea and mentally prep for the day. It’s simple, non-disruptive, and oddly grounding.

Final Thought

Looking back, would it have been easier to ask for help, take a break, or take up journaling? Maybe. But instead, I chose to build. I turned a jar of whipped tallow into a small act of rebellion against burnout and a big step toward intentional living.

And honestly? That feels way better than a hug.
